thanks jelly its a rellie that lived in wareham dorset so im assuming he mjust have worked on the river there. karen

Jelly is right. Just looked it up in Occupations book Boatman: A person who worked on a boat, on rivers and canals. Also the name given to a boat repairer. Cathy

Karen, I,ve got a rellie who was a boatman in Wareham, he ran the ferry to Poole in the 1850s and part owned it with a Mr Gillingham, his name Thomas Brine. Plenty of info on dorset opc. Rod

thanks for the info,he was on his daughters marriage cert 1864 as a boatman so he might have known your rellie salty,its a small world. thx karen
