*The ages of people over 15 years old were usually rounded down to the nearest 5 years. Therefore, someone who was actually 24 years would have their age listed as 20, and someone who was actually 27 years old would have their age listed as 25. The above info is from Ancestry. Mary

1841 census ages were approximations, whilst 1851 was supposed to record actual age (if they knew it) so it is fairly common to find a difference. Jay

Ages on the 1841 census were rounded to the nearest '5' 39 down to 35 etc. children were usually shown ass correct age. This would account for what appears to be a discrepancy. Pauline

Hi i am just looking at the 1851 and 1841 census at a Martin Bradley. On the 1851 census he was born 1806 but on the 1841 census he was born 1811. When my gran did her research he was born 1805 could this possible be the same person? References 1851:- HO107/2098/517/31 1841:- HO107/2/26/17 Many thanks Jen
