Gill: An even better tip is that if you find an extracted record on the IGI for (say) a baptism, then if you make a note of the batch number, you can use that to narrow down your search quite effectively. This works because the batch nos. represent the registers for a particular parish. For example, C1043279 might be the baptisms for Wetherfield, Essex, so if you put in a surname with it, you should get your relatives. There is even a website that can help you with this, which allows you to look up the name of the parish beforehand. My computer is acting up a bit at present so I can't give the link, but if you google for Hugh Wallis, IGI, and batch numbers, that should find it! His site doesn't have every single batch listed, but it's fairly comprehensive nonetheless. |
