Readers Cards

each archive should have its own website with information about what is required. Some only need you to have a CARN (County Archive Readers Network) ticket if you want items from the strong room, rather than general areas. CARN tickets can be used at all records offices. The National Archives requires you to have their own reader's ticket. You can pre-register online but will need proof of identity when you visit to collect. nell

Helen, I have been visiting my local archive, Nottinghamshire Archives, for over a year, maybe 2 years, and I haven't got a reader's card yet! At that particular one, you only need the card to look at original documents - and they have microfiches of all the parish registers anyway, so I have never needed to get a card. Kate.

The Archives are fantastic in Nottingham. You only need a readers card if you want to access things like court documents or stuff left in the archives by people. Im in there hours and hours lol I cant get enough of the place and only the other day we found the parish registers for Papplewick in the book section for public viewing so you dont even need a card for them. Fantastic place.

When you turn up, you have to fill out a form and they give you a little card which proves your id, you just show it every time you go. I had to take a couple of proofs of address to get one, driving licence, council tax demand, that sort of thing, Linda

You can get a Readers Card the first time you visit the Archives. Some require a photo, some don't so probably best to take one just in case. You will also need ID. As long as your rellies come from the area that tha Archives are in, you will be able to find loads of info! Births, marriages and deaths from the parish records, electoral registers, they usually have the GRO Indexes, local censuses and lots more. Stoke Archives has the burial registers for all the municipal cemeteries in Stoke on Trent so I found lots of burials that way, not sure if all Archives have those though. Sam x

Just go to the records office tell them you wish to do some research and they will give you a readers card. If you take some form of identity with you, driving licence etc. you can get one valid for 12 months. Kathlyn
