Actually, the 'stone frigate' or shore-based establishment is called HMS Nelson not Victory. It's a little confusing because Admiral Horatio Nelson's flagship HMS Victory, the oldest commissioned ship in the world, is docked nearby and is part of the Portsmouth Naval Command area in which HMS Nelson is the stone frigate or shore facility. Also known locally and by Royal Naval personnel as Vicky Barracks it was constructed in 1903; it was originally called HMS Victory but renamed HMS Nelson in the 1970's, so it would have been known as HMS Victory in the 1940's. Telephone: 023 92722351. You can take a virtual tour of HMS Nelson on http://www.vrportsmouth(.)co(.)uk/iview_quicktime/source/08_hms_nelson_barracks.html [remove the brackets] |

Hi Karen I believe it was a shore base at Portsmouth. |

No naval expert Karen, but I have a feeling this was NOT a ship, but a shore based naval barracks. Problem is, when you google, you get a lot of stuff about Nelson's Victory. May be Portsmouth/Plymouth area? Jay |
