I was at my mum's house today to collect some old family photos to scan. Whilst rummaging through the cupboards to get the photos I noticed an old brown envelope, stuffed full of paperwork. Being a nosey sort I had a look inside- I could not believe it, it was certificates relating to my grandparents ancestors on both sides, going back 3 generations (from them that is) I now have names & dates of a whole load more ancestors!!! It is an especially good find as my grandparents were from Austria & Hungary, and we only really knew the names of their respective fathers, nothing else, I had given up hope on that side and only traced my fathers English side. My mother did not know about these documents , she had just packed all my grandparents stuff up and never looked at it. So, don't ignore that ancient looking pile of papers stuffed in the cupboard-you never know what treasures you might discover!!!

Hi What a great find. I would love to come across something like that. I have had to pay for everything and don't even have many photos at moment. May be one day (sighs wistfully) Tina

Well done Ann. I had a similar find, when going through my mums cupboard looking for photos, she remembered she had a tin full of papers from my Grans house. She had never looked at them, so when we opened it, like you, there was a treasure trove of certificates, diaries, address books, and more photos!

A lovely find for you. I asked my sister for 2 years if she had anything useful to which she always said no. (I didnt doubt her, she is SUCH a tidy person). Suddenly she rang me when she was looking for her old passport or something and came across a biscuit tin - original certs going back to GGF and his kids plus my dad and mums birth certs/marriage and lots of bits including a report by the headmaster given to my dad when he was 14 and going for his first job interview.

How lovely for you,I found my Uncle again last year with help from Derek he found him on the Electoral Roll but he sadly died last week ,but not before he had told me he had a whole lot of family stuff like a Bible with names dates etc going way back, and as they were Russian you can imagine how hard they are to research ,he promised he would let me see it one day. Now he is gone and I am worried because his wife isnt interested in this sort of thing and I think she may throw the lot out.I am in two minds whether to offer her money for them.
