Hi, I'm having trouble finding my dad's cousin on the bmd indexes on Ancestry. I've been given a rough date for his birth but can't find him. So I thought I'd search for his parents marriage to check when that is. I know it is in 1945 as I found it on the Staffordshire BMD site ages ago but that site doesn't break it down into quarters. The trouble is I can't find the marriage in 1945 on Ancestry, or a quarter either side of 1945. Can anyone explain this? I've searched for both bride and groom in case there was a typo but can't find them. The couple are Grace Emily Dawson and Victor William Bailey. I am searching for their eldest son Lionel who I have been told was born about 1946-47. I believe this could be out by a few years as the person who told me about his sisters DOB was wrong by 2 years. His sister, Heather, was born in 1951 (I was told 1949) so I am assuming he was born between 1945 and 1951. There is a Lionel on the Staffordshire BMD but the mothers surname doesn't match on Ancestry. I guess what I really want to know is 1. Can an entry go missing from the BMD indexes if it was on the regional register and 2. is it common for there to be errors on the mothers maiden name on the bmd indexes? Sorry if this is too long winded or confusing. I'm off to bed now so please don't be offended if I don't reply for a while. Thanks in advance for any advice you have and yes, I realise there is danger in making asssumptions. Toni

Toni have you tried ordering the marriage certificate via the Staffordshire BMD site - would that help??

I just checked the Staffs. BMD website, and it doesn't have any Dawson/Bailey marriages for 1945!

Hi Toni I think these may be the one's you are looking for: Marriage: Victor William Bailey/Grace E Dawson 1946 Apr - Jun quarter Newcastle L Vol. 6b page 209 Birth: Lionel V Bailey - mother's name Dawson 1946 Oct - Dec quarter Stoke Vol. 9b page 945. I also checked 1947 & 1948 but no births for Lionel listed for those years. Hope they're the right ones anyway :-) Mary

Hello, Thanks for the help. I must have done a typo with the wedding year. Mary you're a genius. I couldn't find Lionel. I guess after trawling through looking for his sisters I missed his quarter and then when the marriage wasn't there either I thought I was going insane. It goes to show the importance of making sure you write things down correctly. Thanks again everyone Toni
