Hi there, Has anyone any tips on how to go about finding out about my (deceased) grandmother's history? I'll set the scene - she was a navy cook from what I know, and gave birth in Coleshill, Birmingham in Feb 1953. No father's name was given on the birth certificate and nothing is known of her time down there (she was originally from Lanarkshire, Scotland) Is there any way of finding out ANYTHING else about this time? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Does the birth cert give any searchable clues.Ie her present address or the ship she may have been on ,or was she an onshore employee. If she had joined up then you may perhaps find her naval records.

When you say she was a Navy cook, do you mean that she served with the WRNS? She would have been based at a shore station........in those days women did not serve on board Royal Navy ships. Reg Reg
