I've been looking for the birth entry of one of my ancestors and cant find it anywhere. He was born John Weatherley according to the census and was born 1874. I have looked under every variation of the surname I can think of but cant find a birth entry anywhere. He shows up in all the census, under various spellings but usually Weatherley or Weatherly. Last seen in 1901 census under Whetherley still with parents aged 26 so they're consistent on birth. Can anyone see something I cant? There's no second christain name given so dont think he was registered under a different name. Thanks Sam

Sam, Don't think his parents were married. Perhaps he was John Hopper? Rose

Definitely not Henry John as he's a distant cousin as is a Rchard John who's in right area and date. Portland Rose I think you may have hit the nail on the head and I dont believe I've been so thick as to miss it. His parents were John Alfred Wev and Elizabeth Hoppen who didnt marry until 6/6/1875. Although I had clicked they married after the birth it didnt occur to me that he might've been registered under his mum's name which would explain why I couldn't find him. His grandfather on Wev side was William so that's where his name may have come from too. Think I'll be sending for that birth cert to see what it says. Was it usual to record the birth in just mother's name if the father accepted paternity? As they got married soon after I wonder why he wasnt registered under Weatherley. Thank you guys for your help.

Hi Sam, I've helped a few other people where a child was born before the marriage and the child was registered under the mother's maiden name but had some reference to the father's name in there also. Rose
