My grandad recently gave me a copy of what he thought was my great-grandads birth certificate. However it had no other details except for the name and date of birth. It has the title 'Cerificate of Registry of Birth'. Does anyone know if this is a proper birth certificate, because I don't really want to pay out for one from the Records office, only to get the same thing again. Cheers, Ben. |

Sounds like the 'short' birth cert, which unfortunately is of no help to genealogy. If you apply for the full cert, it will have names of parents (&mmn) address & occupation of father. Also name of informant. Jay |

Sounds like a short copy. The records office will have the full version which will give much more detail. However if the name and DOB are enough for you, then you don't have to order. A full copy will give the parents names and mothers maiden name though, useful for getting back another generation. It will also give fathers occupation and often address. |

Thanks for the reply. Does that mean there isn't a full birth certificate? |

There will definitely be a full certificate, £7 for the full cert will get you the parents names - occupations mother's maiden name addresses and tell you wwho registered the birth... well worth the money |
