Glen In Tinsel Knickers Report 5 Sep 2006 23:30

Thanks Dea, I'm afraid i'll frazzle a few brains with this one, mine went at about 3 o'clock!! I just can't put all the info together in an easy to read format that makes sense. Too many conflicting points that raise questions, too many bmd refs to quote, too many names that might or might not exist, too many rumours to prove/disprove. If i throw the rumours out the window i'm still stuck at 1923,and can't see a way back to 1901. I need a big desk, flipchart and certs to show everything.Grrrrrrrrrr Glen

Makes it twice as hard when you may/may not have been given incorrect info - I do sympathise. One is always terrified of discarding something seemingly trivial but later discovered to be important - whereas if one hadn't had the information at all, the problem would, perhaps, be tackled with a different approach. Sounds like it's back to the index and a fun few days for you! Jay

I wouldn't be suprised to find a link to somewhere other than Lincoln for John and/or Annie for the early yers of their lives. I did consider looking for the marriage of Marjorie Townsend to George Goddard,(as per my dodgy info source claims occured at some point) perhaps it might throw up her proper spelling or proper name, also Goddard births with mmn of Townsend dated after any possible marriage. I think it is a case of trawling for possible bits nearer to the present day, then use any info gleaned to get further back. There are probably a dozen ways round this,it's just finding the best way through or round it,narrow down the names and dates, discount the details from the other tree if necessary, eliminate the way off entries and see what is left. Not impossible but a fair bit of work. Glen Glen

This is probably totally a red herring and as I haven't got a sub to Ancestry, I can't do any preliminary follow up. 1901 census index on here - Margorie Townsend (note spelling)aged 3, born and living in Great Grimsby. I am wondering if, because of the name Margery, she could be a sibling of your John F, although I can't see a suitable John. I asked about dob incase John was born post 1901 census. or was much older and working by 1901? Jay

Right again Janet, the third party is a daughter from the Townsend/Stochill marriage, and claims Marjorie Townsend is her/my aunt. As for John F,he is a complete unknown as for date/place of birth, but the 1945 death cert says he is deceased. Nothing obvious for his death though,at least none seem to stand out and i have every GRO death ref from 1925 to 1945.I suspect he died post 1945 but not sure why i think that. Back soon, grubs up,lol Glen

Am I right in thinking some of this information came from a third party, who possibly got her info by word of mouth from yet another party? Is there any possibility that Margery could have been a sibling of the father John F, rather than a sibling of James? (Margery is a bit easier to get a handle on!) Any ideas/guesstimates of a rough birth date for John F? jay

I did wonder that Dea I went to get those a while ago, mostly to try and narrow down his birth (it's a long story but they couldn't supply them without his dob/dod so i went for the marriage cert,it was the only known 100% thing i knew about him, and i didn't have it at the time). If i sent you the death cert you would see my problem. Glen

Just a thought Glen You have James's army details on the marriage cert - Could you explore the possibility of getting hold of his army records? They may tell you something? Dea x

Hi Janet Yes it is that James Turner otherwise James Townsend death riddle. I haven't found any reference to Marjorie (or variants) in the birth index. James Townsend birth mmn Turner is Q2 1923,Lincoln district Joseph Townsend birth mmn Turner is Q2 1925,Lincoln district Nothing for a John Townsend marriage to Annie Turner (as per 1923 birth cert parents),except for a possible in Q3 1920 for John T Townsend to Isabella A Turner in Greenwich. I'm thinking that maybe John and Annie didn't marry or Annie is a pet name (great help to me if that should be the case!) Glen

Am I right in thinking this is the chap with the alias on the death cert - James Turner, otherwise known as James Townsend? Just checking, because I think the position of the names is important and that the alias is the 'taken' name, if you see what I mean! And did the children go in the order James, Margery and then John/Joseph? (is there anyway that the F in father's name could be a J? Jay

Glen, You may know better but the marriage cert, and the birth ref. both say Stockill (without the 'h') Just in case this makes a difference. Dea x

James Townsend (as per the Townsend/Stockhill marriage cert) is my birth father, his line is the one i'm trying to work along.John F Townsend, builder will be my grandfather (you see i didn't know the builder bit till today) The Stockhill name comes in purely for the marriage cert i needed reading. The bride has no blood connection to me,but is the mother of some of my half sibs. If 'Stockill' is a surname of interest, there's a professional genealogist called Roy Stockhill on the soc[.]genealogy[.]britain newsgroup who could well be able to help you.

I think the living in sin is highly likely, but mother was informant of the birth and told a porkie pie. There is supposedly a sister (Marjorie) born to the couple abt 1924, but nothing in the birth index, and another brother who appears to change christian names at some point.(Joseph who becomes John?) I put this line to one side for ages, but via James i have 12 or more half siblings. Glen
