My Ariels lived in Bristol from early 1700s. Another Ariel family lived in Thorne, Yorkshire. Same occupations(wine and sugar merchants). Can’t find any connection between them. However, one Ariel male from Bristol marries a girl from Hawkshead,Lancashire, in 1787. The wedding was in Bristol. Stacks of the Lancashire family attend. Their son then goes to Yorkshire and marries a local girl in 1815. The Ariels from Bristol attend as well as the Kirkbys and Sawreys from Hawkshead. They then live back in Bristol. I know money wasn’t a problem, but can someone connect Bristol, Lancashire (Hawkshead) and Yorkshire (Thorne)?

Shipping? Coal or similar coastal trade? Bristol is pretty obvious. Thorne is on the Humber. Hawkshead is not that far from Morecambe Bay.

Did you ever see Jeremy Clarkson on WDYTYA? His lot were from Yorkshire, but the family firm invented Kilner Jars, although they had factories in Yorks they shipped goods all over and had a warehouse in London on the side of the Thames. Some of the family had either trips or houses in the smoke,as they had several patents applied for at the patents office. We live on an island and pre 1850 most things and people moved/traded/or earned a living from nautical exploits in some fashion. After that add the railways, and add factor in the canals which bridged the gap between the two as well. Just seeing you replies now that I'm awake again. 6a.m. here. We haven't had that program here in Oz at all. I've seen all the remarks about it. I'll look at the coal idea, as some of the unmarried females were living on 'dividends from railways' later in life. Must have been paying well. They had stacks of servants.
