Help reading occupation on census

On the 1841 English census a George Platt born around 1816 is shown as married to Elizabeth and born in Great Budworth Cheshire. I believe this man may be my huabands g grandfather but I cannot read his occupation, can anyone help? he later worked for Royal Mail Thanks

It looks like Artualer to me, but I don't know what that is. Tried googling but nothing came up. Wendy

vera ive tried it looks like virtualer but cant find anything to do with that in the old occupations list hopefully someone will be able to tell you what it is sorry clare

Wendy you just beat me to it. Looks like ?rtualer - don't think the first letter is an A though. Did wonder about Victualler, but if it is the writer was illiterate! Mark

hiya well to me it looks like victualler, am sure it was something to do with the sales of alcohol, try google Julie

I think it looks like 'victualler', too. I think it is a person who sells or serves food and drinks. Susan

Hi again, There is an alternative speling of 'Victualer' so I think it is probably that Mark

Looking letter by letter, for what it's worth, and comparing others on the page. The first letter is not the same as an A in Ag. Lab. It doesn't have a stroke down the side. The second letter is definitely an r as in Winterbottom. I can't get Vic out of the first two letters. I'd expect a V to be the same shape as a W. The next few are t u a l. The last two are probably e and r but the last letter isn't very well formed compared with Chantler. The enumerator was obviously taught at school to write on the line. It's a pity the line's a bit heavy.
