Clare Report 5 Sep 2006 11:46

i have the wedding certificate for my gtgt grandfather george vernon 1. he has lied about his age saying he is 21 when in fact is probably 18. cannot find birth registered but should be around 1855 as have death certificate. 2. his wife has stated her age as 18 when she is in fact 16 (have birth certificate) 3. her father is deceased but mother still alive when she married her brother is witness at her wedding all names for gtgt grandmother given on wedding certificate - all correct. 4. george has put his father as 'daring vernon' deceased(cannot find any reference to a daring vernon) and mothers name as unknown. i have been chasing this information for the last 9months thinking that georges father and mother are deceased from your experience what other possibilities could there be! george joined the circus aged 6 and has been registered on every census since the age of 6. any input would be greatly appreciated as this is driving me mad now!!

Is he on the 1861 census in the circus then?? Which one is he? Merry

'Daring Vernon' sounds like a description of a circus act rather than a proper name. Maybe George didn't know his father's given name. Kath. x

merry george is registered as george batty vernon in 1861 he is shown as a visitor in an inn with a john kinton who he is with in 1871 with the swallows(circus people) they are in the same area when george is 6 but further down on the census. im sure that the batty is reference 'battys' circus.

kath im sure that is a stage name but am worried that george lied on the wedding cert about his parents because of the age of consent at the time, and if he has then his parents could be still around. does this mean that im going to have to give up with my vernons?
