sorry - pressed the send button before I'd finished typing the message !! HELP - just received my grandparents marriage certificate and I know my granddad's mum was Scottish, but wasn't sure where my grandad was born. He does NOT show up in the UK/Wales Birth register at all, so he must have been born in Scotland. On his marriage certificate he is showing up as 38 in 1921, which means he will have been born 1882/1883 - can anyone help with searching for WILLIAM MATHIESON born about this time? Also, any help with census information for the 1891 census would also be a great help, although I have discovered with Mathieson - spelt with an IE - is not an uncommon name in Scotland ! THANK YOU Janet |

Janet Scotlandspeople.gov.uk is the place you need. It's the official Scottish GRO site and it's pay per view. You buy 30 credits for 6 pounds. Having narrowed your search down, it tells you there are x number of people matching your search, on y number of pages. Each page costs you one credit to view. The trick is to get down to as few pages as possible without accidentally missing your target! Once you've located the exact person/family, you can view the census image or marriage register page etc. for 5 credits. The site remembers what you've paid for and you can view those images again for free. It takes a bit of getting used to but if you score a hit the cost of register pages is a lot less than sending for English certificates. Your unused credits don't expire but if you don't use them all in a set period (can't remember offhand) you have to buy another 6 pounds worth and your unused credits are added in. J |

John - thank you ! Will give it a go; I am quite lucky in that I do have quite a good idea of dob, so hopefully won't take me too many attempts to find him. Thanks again Janet |
