Does anyone use the facilities at Kew? I need help checking out records of G.Grandfather who died at sea.he was cook on Elder Dempster Line ship called 'Banana' and l am told records might be there?? help please Pat

Yes, records of all seamen lost at sea are there. The index is BT153 and the actual register(I think it is) is BT154. This shows the list of effects of a seaman and what happened to them. It shows the ship, date of event, name of deceased, cause of death, date effects were recd at office and place landed at, and sometimes what happened to the effects then - did they go to a widow or whatever. A very kind lady from here found the info for me - regrettably it's something that can't be done online although I had a very nice email from the Nat. Archives. In the case I was looking at we also got the crew list! Fascinating! Good luck

Pat, you don't need to go to the archives.... for £3.50 you can download a pdf of the document. You could be reading it within 5 minutes of reading this! Go to the section 'Documents online.' It's a fairly new service so Woody probably didn't have access to it at the time.
