Anyone got any ideas as to what is the best way to trace records of a John Davies born in Merthyr, South Wales in 1837/8? There are hundreds of them !! Arghhhh! Thanks Graeme |

My g. g. grandfather gave his place of birth as 'Milford' in one census. If he'd been consistent and claimed that in all the others, I'd never have found his family! People sometimes gave the nearest town that they'd expect the other person to have heard of, so be aware of that. I know that means you'll have even more names you might have to eliminate because of this, but it's worth remembering! Good luck, anyway! |

I'd suggest a large gin or maybe some aspirin. But I've done my husband's family tree and sometimes its not as tricky as you might think. I've got all his great-great grandparents bar one. Start now and work back using the census till you get to this chap. He might still be with his family in 1851, and then you can probably use other family members details to find him in 1841. His parents' names and father's occupation could be used as checking points when ordering certs. His father's name and occupation should also be on his marriage cert, unless he was illegitimate. nell |
