WW1 service records coming to Ancestry

Just read in the October issue of Family History Monthly that TNA are working with Ancestry.co.uk to upload their service and pension records (record classes SO363 and SO364) to the internet for the first time. In SO363 you will be able to search for those who were pensioned out through illness or injury. There will be join-up forms which give a lot of detail about therir pre-war lives, where they lived, next of kin and physical appearance. In SO364 there is information such as dates of campaigns servied in, regimental numbers career progression and wounds suffered. They hope to have these records online by Christmas. So those of you who cant get to the TNA will be able to access them at home! Pauline |

In the meantime, a useful tip.... Any male born around the 1890's should be checked against the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site - sadly many of that generation died in the First World War. |

Brilliant! I have my grandfather who was pensioned out in 1917. I know where he lived when he enlisted where he received his injuries, which hospital he was treated in and where he lived afterwards. He had a very common name, so hopefully, with all the information that will be available on Ancestry, I might even find his record! |
