Hi, I was wondering if anyone is experienced with Scottish searching. My dad Andrew Sloan (b 1932) is the eldest on 4 children born to Andrew Sloan and Helen Crichon in Glasgow. His father was much older than his mother and was already married with children when they met. I am keen to trace his step brothers and sisters but have nothing really to go on. He thinks they took the name Aitken and seems to think there was a Tommy and a Willy. I dont even know how to trace my grandfathers original marriage without her name. Any tips would be gratefully recieved. Thanks Jeanette

You are going to have to visit a couple of sites for info. Scottish civil registration started in 1855,the online bmd is at scotlandspeople but the dates are not to the present day. Birth index 1855-1905 Marroages 1855-1925 Deaths 1855 to 1955 All available on the scotlandspeople website, pay per view,£5=30 credits and certs can be downloaded directly from the site for 5 credits For later events and how to search them you should visit the Scottish GRO website for a full explanation. I would first try to find the marriage certificate - might be on scotlands people as before 1930 - that will tell you his age. Then might be worth looking for his death cert - it's possible he may have died before 1955. His death cert ought to state the names of his spouses - you will then have the name of the first wife and be able to get that marriage certificate. From that you should be able to trace them via census - thereby narrowing the location. If he had children before 1905 you will be able to search and find them online - if they are after 1905 then you need to go to the registrar office. For the Registrar's office try entering (perhaps Glasgow Registrar) followed by gov.uk. They are usually very helpful. They do charge (I think it's £10 per hour) but the end result could well be worth it. Good luck Christine

Hi Jeanette, You have received some really good advice on here. One other thing which I have found very usefull is the site genealogy(dot)com It's free. Register, click on communities, click country,Scotland, region Glasgow and post a message. I have found people to be most helpful in all the regions. They will check census and other records for you. Good Luck ! Margaret
