Angela - why aren't you in bed? Anyway some of mine change all the time. It really wasn't important to them like it is now. However you may need to do extra research for instance someone states on one census born in Manchester and then the next states was born in Macclesfield just to confirm that you have the right person. |

Very usual! Sometimes people couldn't remember where they were born, sometimes they gave the village whereas next time they would give the name of the nearest large town, sometimes the enumerator misheard - and lots of other reasons why they don't match from census to census. Sam x |

I think often it was a case of getting the information from the person who answered the door. Sometimes the head of the house, sometimes a family member, sometimes the landlord or another tenant. It's not like now when the form is filled in and posted - many people couldn't read or write. |

I have one that was born in Dorset, Herefordshire AND the United States. I suppose if anyone had an accent someone giving the details just made a guess...either that or they didn't want to be found for some reason. |

Some of my ancestors are very consistent. Some of them even change county between censuses! What gets me is where you have 2 candidates for a relative. One of them is born in the right place and time to be yours, but ISN'T and the one who is not the right age and born in the wrong place turns out to be yours! nell |

Angela, When they're consistent thru' all the censuses, they're lying! Regs Annie |

LMAO mine seem to move about an awful lot as well (bloody gypsy blood I reckon now I know where I get it from lol) Most of them are Engineers so I spose they travelled around for that hey? but still my James is being rather elusive tracked down his mum & dad all through census (and parish records but not submitted ones I learnt now lol) all except James and his brother Edward :( I know James didnt die before 1901 cus he married my great nanna in 1906 lol but god what a stressful family to track down. Oh well was on here looking till 4-30am and now back again to try and find em (I gave up for a few weeks and concentrated on my Binch side but now got back to 1674 thanx to the LDS and backed up by archives so now back on to these naughty webbs lol) |
