my grandad (3gen) is down as a chelsie pensioner at the age of 45is this a misprint gypsie

Do you mean because he's too young?? No, I don't think so......I've seen lots of Chelsea Pensioners of that age.....often they are doing another job too. Is he on a census? Merry

No If he was invalided out of the Army he would be a pensioner altho not an inmate at the Chelsie hospital, My grt grt grandad was down as a Chelsie pensioner ,he was a regular from 1827 to 1839 and came out on a pension aged 39

My ggg uncle was invalided out of the Army at the age of 34 in 1849 and is described in 1851 as a Chelsea Pensioner. I am not quite clear how far back you are going - when you say grandad (3gen), do you mean your ggg grandad? If you are going back that far, you might find his army records in the National Archives and they would tell you when and where he joined up, where he served and why he was discharged. Tina

I go along with what Tina has said cos i got Grt grt grandads Army record from National Archives too.A great find cos it described him by build ,eye colour etc and made him seem more real as my family

Don't be confused by the word pension just because the modern term relates mainly to old people.
