Just had a quick look and MY GRANDMOTHER is on there!

She was a milliner and had a shop in the old centre of Bristol.

I found her under Memories of Bristol Past & Present...'Madam Slade of Broadmead'.

I do have a copy of the book where this came from but I will have to spend more time on this VAST site and see what else I can find. I was only 4 when she retired and can't remember much about the shop...would love to find some advert!

Hi Teresa, glad it's helped you. I couldn't get the second page working yesterday but the first page was so full of info that will keep me going for a week!!. Have you clicked on the 1968? flood pictures, they're well worth seeing.

I shall be spending the next year looking through this site...so much to see. I have a couple of books about Bristol which have some of the same photo's. But I shall be exploring every avenue to see what else I can find about my Gran's family in particular as there were so many Davis families in Bristol I have so far found no connections or other details about her siblings or father.

Perhaps you should amend your thread to 'Bristol Rellies...LOOK HERE', as it is such a little goldmine.

Thanks Trish, I have just been reading the Bitton timeline - the amount of stuff they have is truly amazing. My father came from Kelston which is the next village so I recognise a lot of the names. For those who have not looked they have trawled the coroner's reports and settlement records as well as local parish records and court reports for the (18th century. It is suprising how much survives. It is very sad to see how many children were killed in mining accidents or falling down mine shafts. Often more than one from the same family. I was chuckling at the poor man who had to be manacled to marry the girl he got pregnant - a real taste of the 18th century. I had a school friend who was related to members of the Cockroad gang who were executed for running a protection racket. I notice you have an opportunity to add a comment under the pictures so I have asked if anyone has any more information about a couple of places I am interested in. I belong to a local history society so I know some of the people involved in the site.
