Thanks for all your replies could not get rid of the visitors , very selfishly stayed the night.She swears she was born in India in Jellywaw or whatever I have probably spelt that wrong. You are probably right a family story passed down completely wrong.

A friend's dad always said he was born in Ceylon (1919). Turns out he was born in Lewisham lol!! Merry

I think it more likely that she was born Aldershot whilst her dad was out in India. You know how stories get passed through the family......something like 'Ann (or whoever) was born when her dad was in India' and everyone just assumed that meant she was born in India. I'm sure the certificate wouldn't say she was born Aldershot if she wasn't. Kath. x

If you can get her dads army record it may help solve the question

Valerie, i had this same problem with my g/grandparents marriage cert. they were registered on overseas as being married in india, i sent for the cert but when i recieved it, it says they were married at curragh camp in County Kildare, all the children were born in India as well,I still don't get it?????moe

Valerie, what does it say in the column headed 'When and where born'? (If there is such a column!) If she was born in India, then her birth registration could come under the 'overseas' registrations but I have not seen an actual 'overseas' birth certificate, so I don't really know what the difference is between that kind and a normal one! thanks for all replies sorry got visitors, so have to go again , but I have her birth cert it says born Aldershot , but eveyone says she was born in India , I wondered if it could have been done on the quiet. Must go again back later, otherwise my visitors will wonder what they have done .

My dad was born in India in 1921........he birth cert is Army one...but there is a register for births like his....

Hi Valerie, Our son was born in New Delhi, India in 1969. His birth was registered at the Consular Office within the British High Commission, and can be found in this country on the BMD under 'Consular Indices'. My sister and I were born in Athens, Greece in 1948 & 1949, this time the birth were registered within the British Embassy and are found in this country under 'Consular Indices'. Our grandaughter was born in 1983 in Germany whist her dad was in the British Army stationed there. Her birth was registered at the British Embassy whilst at the same time her parents renounced any German rights,cos technically she was German born of british parents. Her birth records are in the overseas section at the FRC

Hi Valerie, Did you find the birth registration in the ordinary complete index on Ancestry? Did it have an English registration district? If so, I think she was born here. Kath. x

Hi Valerie I was born abroard, my Dad was in the Army, and have a birth certificate from my country of birth. It is a laminated one and so is not affected by wear and tear. I recently had to send for my British version to enrol for Uni and found it easily on 1837. As it was in the army records it took less than a week to arrive. Sandra

It should say in the first column of the certificate where she was born (usually after the date). Kath. x

Well if her dad was in the Army there she would have been registered at the british embassy & her birth details would be found in the overseas section on 1837 online etc.Have you got the birth cert cos this may give you more details. If you can find her dads Army records this may also help.What years are you looking at?

My aunt is sure she was born in India so is her family yet on her birth cert she is registered here.Her father was in the Army out there.She was told her birthday was the 12th December and her family always celebrated it on that day, but on her birth cert its the 2nd December.Do you think its likely that it was registered here.
