Please, is there anybody that can throw any light on why my g.grandfather Laidler Milburn, born in Crook...(on the 1901 census, a coalminer in Crook, Co Durham), should died in 1938 in Blean, Kent? I have looked at Blean in 1901....there is only two small Districts and everyone living there appears to be born there. There does not seem to be any work that would attract people. Did something happen in Blean after 1901 that I don't know about? He married for the third time in 1902 in Crook age 37. He may have joined the Navy but I doubt it! Jean Sorry, meant to say I haven't sent for the death cert yet, as I have only just found the death, |

well there was an isolation hospital there and a workhouse that later became herne bay hospital. His death cert may give you a clue as to why he died in Blean district. Its not necessarily Blean as that reg didrict covers Herne Sturry & Whitstable |

Well, he need not have moved to live in Blean, its just where he died! Blean isn't two little hamlets, the registration district includes Whitstable and part of Canterbury, as well as a much wider area. He might have been taking the sea air at Whitstable or Herne Bay. Only the death cert will give more information. BLEAN REGISTRATION DISTRICT Registration County : Kent. Created : 1.7.1837. Sub-districts : Herne; Sturry; Whitstable. GRO volumes : V (1837-51); 2a (1852-1930). Parishes in Kent (1837-1930): Canterbury (small part) (1837-1910), Chislet, Hackington, Herne, Herne Bay, Hoath, Reculver, Seasalter, Staplegate (1837-1910), Sturry, Swalecliffe, Westbere, Whitstable. Registers now in Canterbury with Swale district. |

Another possible explanation. The Kent coalfield started operating in the early 1900s so he could have emigrated to work there. J |

Thanks, I suppose he may not have moved there. It just seems a long way to go for sea air...It would have been easier to go to the North East coast. Your're both right...I'll have to way till I get a death cert. I'll find which Registration District is holding it and sed off straight away. thanks both Jean |

Thanks John... I was looking for something like that....I don't suppose I'll ever find out when he went down to Kent, (somewhere between 1902 and 1938) but I can maybe find out who he was with by the next of kin and what he was doing Thanks |

Yes I did Nell. Laidler Milburn, Blean Distict, Mar Qtr, 1938. I was just trying to find out why he died at 73 so far from home if it wasn't chasing work. I had never heard of Blean......it's so educational, this searching. |

So what I said originally stands - Blean reg district covered quite a wide area taking in several towns and villages. nell |

Nell, I feel as though I've offended you, what did you apologise for? I really was glad of the info...I had no idea where Blean was...or anything about it. I'm soooo sorry if I have. I always appreciate replies on this board. Jean |

That area certainly had a colliery. My grandfather worked in one there in 1932 called Snowdown Colliery |

Jean I'm not offended! I just thought maybe you were confusing the registration district with the actual village of Blean. No worries! |

Information about the Kent coalfields can be found here. http://www.dover.gov.uk/kentcoal/ Of the main collieries, only Chislet would be covered by the Blean registration district. Gordon |
