I'm trying to find a birth for Jane Readman b. 1845 Wenden, Nr Halifax but I can't find a place called Wenden. I've got the info from IGI and other GR members have same place for her. I'm thinking it should be Ovenden. Any ideas, could IGI or Parish Record be wrong?? Elaine

Any record can be wrong! Its unlikely the original parish register is wrong, but likely that a transcription could be. Have you looked on a map - www.streetmap*co.uk for example - for area round Halifax, or googled Wenden, or looked on Genuki?

I've googled Wenden and tried Genuki. When I've relooked at IGI it was submitted by LDS member. I'm going to have another look at census info - to see what they have her down as. Elaine

A word of caution..........you may not find a birth on the GRO; registration wasn't compulsory until 1875. But don't let that stop you from searching..........just go to Ancestry and trawl the images for the appropriate time-scale. Good luck Reg

I have looked through the complete Ancestry images for 1845 and the first quarter of 1846, but there is no Jane Readman registered. The only one is a Jane Elizabeth who was registered in Whitby. The problem is that although they were supposed to register births from 1837 onwards, it wasn't enforced until 1875,so many people didn't bother. Without the reference you won't be able to order a certificate. The most you will be able to hope for is to find her birth in the parish records. Linda

Could this be the marriage of Jane's parents? Matthew Readman Male Event(s): Birth: 1802 Egton, Yorkshire, England Parents: Father: Thomas Readman Mother: Ann Shaw Marriages: Spouse: Mary Pierson Marriage: 05 MAR 1832 Whitby, Yorkshire, England Reg

If that is the marriage, then this may be the birth Name: Jane Elizabeth Readman Year of Registration: 1845 Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar District: Whitby County: Yorkshire - North Riding Volume: 24 Page: 526 but then again,it may not be Linda

Could it be a mistranscription of OVENDEN. Seems likely, as later census was Overden (another mistranscription?) Roger.

Yes Reggie those are Jane's parents. Linda thanks for looking but I don't think thats Janes birth in Whitby (Readman is a common name in Whitby). Just wondering - could parents register a birth in a different area to where they were born?? Roger - I also think it may be Ovenden. I'll have to give their local Register office a ring to see if they can help. I'll ask on here first to see if anyone has Parish records for the area. I'm waiting for delivery of her son's birth cert to see if that shows anything as no father was listed on his marriage cert. Any more ideas?? Many thanks for all your help. Elaine

I used to live in Halifax - there's no Wenden, it's sure to be a mistranscription of Ovenden.
