Thank you Glitter! I was so excited, but even though I was let down, looking through the asylum records was fascinating. The things doctors would prescribe anti-depressants for now were treated by a visit to the funny farm! Strangely, the men mostly were admitted as maniacs, whereas the ladies had melancholia. Poor people. Thanks again.

Mandy, Sorry to hear you did not find what you were looking for. I love visting my local records office - sadly none of my rellies are from East Yorkshire so usually do lookups for GR Members - trouble is I find the records office so fascinating that I could spend hours there. Maureen

Today I took a 30 minute journey to Matlock to visit the Derbyshire Records Office for the second time ever. I was wanting to look at the asylum records Glitter so very helpfully found for me a week or two ago. Would you just know it....some of the volumes of patients were missing between the dates I was searching. Having searched the remaining registers of admission, I was disappointed that my man could still not be found:( I decided to scrable through allsorts of other nick-nacks whilst there, including land tithe maps, bastardy orders and Parish Records. I did find one or two incidental tit-bits of information, but nothing of real meaty importance. However, I did discover through baptism records that my gg grandad was illegitemate, so therefore, the marriage I thought I'd found of his mother and father didn't actually exist! I did enjoy my time, even though it was fairly fruitless on this occasion. The poor lady beside me was on her third day at the microfiche machines researching gooness knows what surname....she was from Dorset and stopping in her caravan! So even though the journey was not that useful, I still enjoyed myself, am happy with my efforts and can't wait for a beer or 6 later to avert my eyes to something new! Thanks for listening!
