Does anyone know what M.S. means under occupation. It looks as though he is a relative visiting. |

Ive had something similar in census where the sons have been working on the farm with their father but are still recorded as Male servants. (The word servant is often interchangeable with 'employee'). The trouble with the 1841 is you get such little detail. |

1841 does not give relationships between people in the same household. But I have found lots of people on later censuses who are related (sons, nieces, brothers etc) who are described as 'servant' in the relationship column. I presume it means they were employed by the relative who was head of household. I've also found relatives listed as 'lodger' or 'boarder'. nell |

The head of house is a fishmonger so he might be an employee. Thanks for all your answers |
