Hi, I have just received among a batch of certificates sent for, my for wrong certificate in 12 years! Following the census trail and IGI, I found what I thought was the marriage of my maternal 2nd great grandfather. First child born 7 Apr 1878, shown on 81 census. Father William, mother Fanny (Frances), sent for what I expected to be the marriage cert Q2 1877, George Locker and Frances, same area, correct time. Certificate returned as George Locker and Eliza Ann Fitterton. Free BMD shows Eliza on page, picked wrong one!! I now suspect that they married abt Q3, 1873. A full 4.5 years before first found child born. Simple mistake to make? I should have re-checked my facts, but saw what I expected to, did not expect marriage to be so far before first child found. Also sent for sons birth cert at same time, should have waited for that before sending for marriage cert as sons father given as George William Locker not just George. Oh well, have to send for the other one now! Lesson learned. Keith

Well done Keith for making your first mistake in 12 years ! I know when I have searched for registrations and found ones that fit, I get excited and send for them, always with high hopes and fingers crossed that they are the correct ones. I haven't done too badly and have even found members on these boards with the missing certs and so have been able to pass them on to their correct homes. Best wishes, Joan

Hi Joan, Do you know if there is a forum/site that I can put the certificate up for adoption if anyone wants to claim it? Keith Thanks for the nudge on the unwanted certs thread.

an easy mistake to make Keith.Perhaps thay had a couple of children who died at birth. Could account for the gap betwen marriage and 1st child.

Thanks, that is my next task, search the BMD for any other children born before 1878. Keith

Update Have found no other possible children before the first known, but have found another possible birth/death that does fill a later gap. Keith

Another update. Have since made a visit to Stafford records office and found a baptism for a child born in the intervening years, Frances Jane Locker, the plot still goes on, she was baptised 28 April 1875 in Great Wyrley, Staffs. However I cannot find a birth record or death record for her, the only thing I can find is the Baptism! She does not appear (or I cannot find) her on the 1881 census, she is certainly not with the family. This family is getting difficult, I have all children except second born in Gt Wyrley, (second was born Bridgtown, Cannock), Frances Jane baptised in Gt Wyrley, second and third children baptised in Cannock, 4th & 5th children cannot find baptism, 5th child died at 4 months, found his birth on BMD, no baptism, but burial at Gt Wyrley, death on BMD register, 6th child no baptism found either! Help Keith
