Would they have bothered in 1861?

Ive got quite a few who take on the new wifes kiddies. I find they appear as step kids or kids in law in the first census and then in the next appear under the fathers surname. However, they do always seem to give their first surname on marriage or if, say, they join the army. |

Official Adoption did not start until 1927, so the answer to your question is no. OC |

You sometimes find that the children are listed under the husband's name on the census but revert to their original surname when they marry. Heather |

It looks like someone in my tree 'adopted' his wife's son, born in 1861, from a previous 'liason' as the child appears with the wife before she was married. Would he have officially adopted this child in those days, bearing in mind they were an ordinary family of limited means? |
