slightly off topic, but as to switching first and second names about, my o.h. does that, he uses his second name as he hates his first name, bit confusing sometimes, he went to buy his first mobile phone a couple of years ago but because the name on his driving licence didnt match the details he gave them he couldnt get onelol hes never used his first name. jean |

Richard I did a similar thing, except mine was a birth, as well as a death. I had my great grandmother's marriage as Sophia (is there something in the name?). Had all her children's births. She was Sophia. Finally found her birth Josephine! And her death Josephine! Her grave?? Sophia!! Don't ask!!! |

Have been searching for months for the death of gg-grandmother, Elizabeth Sophia Phillips. I knew that she was alive when her husband died (1909), but I couldn't find her death in the index thereafter. I went right through the index images up until 1932, when she would have been 102. Now, looking for an Elizabeth Phillips in London isn't easy as there's hundreds of 'em. Nothing seemed to fit that well, but I drew up a short-list of about 6 that sort of fitted. Have been applying for them one at a time, and each time - completely the wrong cert. Can't really put checking points on death certs as there's no guarantee that the specified info (such as husband's name) will be shown on the cert, or that the age will be right, so it's just a case of buying the cert to see what it says. Anyway, several £££'s later, I decided to re-check the index - maybe the age was wrong in the index, or the name mis-spelt (Philips/Phillipps, etc etc). Nothing. Then, and I don't know why I didn't think of it before, but I decided to check under her middle name - Sophia. And there she was - Sophia E Phillips, died in Wandsworth in 1915, aged 86 (place and age spot-on!). Why she switched to her middle name on her death-bed I've no idea! She was born, married, and on all censuses as Elizabeth - even was the informant of her husband's death in 1909 as Elizabeth. I'm sure that she only did it to p*** me off, and is probably laughing at me from the great beyond... So if anyone is seeking the death of an Elizabeth Phillips in London after 1909, just ask me - I may well have the cert already!! Now, I've got to find her mum's death, 1861-1871. Her name? Elizabeth Phillips of course :-() Richard |
