Sue Thanks, yes I did - I've seen the original marriage register entry at the Essex Records Office. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to check burials for Elizabeth and John while I was at it, but just found the baptisms for their 3 known children. nell

Helen Did you know the Smoothy/Willshire marriage is on line.(the actual image) Go to SEAX, click on image search, put in Chelmsford parish registers and search away.

The smoothy surname has been mangled into Smarthy, Smithy, smothey, Smoothey and Lenorthey but I've tried every combination and looked at all possible Johns born Essex 1776 +/- 2 years and I'm stumped. nell

Anne & Maddie - cheers! Jeanette thanks, but that isn't him. The Smoothy surname is rampant around Birdbrook and other local places between Coggeshall & Saffron Walden, in Essex and adjacent parishes in Suffolk & Cambs. nell

You don't want to give away too much about your whereabouts. You married Elizabeth Wiltshire/Wilsher in 1805 at St Mary's Chemsford. You have sons John 1812, Charles 1816 and daughter Elizabeth 1820 baptised in St Mary's Chelmsford. You are in Chelmsford in 1851 as a widower on poor relief. You die and are buried in Moulsham (a suburb of Chelmsford) in Feb 1861. Where are you 1841?

OK, here's the plan. Your name is John Smoothy, you were born in Coggeshall, 1776 and you need to hide in the 1841 census.
