A birth cert of one of her children will tell you her maiden name,assuming that her children were born in wedlock the mother would be listed as 'Jane Smith formerly Jones' for example. There are other ways to try and work it out,but they only really work for pre 1901 dates and will help to eliminate some of the possible marriages for common surnames. If you know the grooms name and they were born after 1837 FreeBMD might help, assuming that you knew her given name too. |

Often they just took their mother's maiden name. Can you be more specific? |

Not sure what you mean but the maiden name would be shown on the marriage certificate along with her fathers name and occupation. Of course if she were born illegitimately then you may never know the fathers real name as she may just have been registered under her mothers name. If you are working backwards and you know the name/dob of one of her kids, then buy the birth cert and that will give her maiden name. |

how can i find the maiden name of a person to clarify a marriage when she must have been born out of wed lock. if that makes sense. |
