Trying to find birthplace of my g grandfather, born 1860. On his marriage certificate and all census it gives his birthplace as Yorkshire but not the area. Would visiting the record office give any more information? Thanks, Jean

His marriage cert won't give his place of birth, surely?? Merry

Have you got him on the 1861 census? Would you like to give his other details to see if anyone can find out more? Merry

Hi Merry and Snowdrop Sorry about that - no of course it's not on the marriage certificate! His name was John Anderson, b 1860. He married Ethel Barrett in 1886 Newington. On his marriage cert his father's name was also John, deceased. On the 1861 census there is a John born in Hunsley which I think must be the correct one as this is the only John with a father of the same name who has died by 1886! I did post a request on John some time ago but haven't got any further. Thank you for your help Jean

Aaaaaah Jean, if the 1861 (birth in Hursley) is right they lived in Snowdrop Cottage - how appropriate for me!! Seriously - did it say on the marriage certificate what his father's occupation was? .

Actually, there aren't that many John Anderson's born in 1860 in Yorkshire with a father called John - the one in Husley just happened to be top of the list and the one I looked at - no-one ever said he was the right one which is why I asked if she knew the father's occupation.

Jean the born in Hursely one's father was something to do with steam machines (can't quite make out the last word) so it doesn't look like your John's family but I shall look some more.

Jean what sort of a labourer? There's one in West Heslerton who's father is an ag lab.

Jean - do you know for a fact John snr was dead by the time of John' marriage? I don't just mean taking the marriage certificate as gospel. My great grandfather declared his father to be dead in 1896 when he got married in Manchester yet I know he was still alive and living in Worcester - I think it was probably assumed he was dead as communications weren't as good then as they are now. We would need to check the death records to see if John senior really is dead, but until we know we have the right John junior it's a catch 22 situation.

Doesn't say what type of labourer. By 1871, John snr from Hunsley was a farmer so maybe labourer is looking a bit doubtful. I had already checked John from W Heslerton but his father was still alive in 1901. Jean

Hi Jean, The marriage at Newington - would that be Newington, Kirk Ella just outside Hull? What was given as residence of bride and groom at time of marriage? Jay

Hi Jay No, the Newington on the marriage cert is Surrey, which is where they were both living, Jean
