Hi both of you - only just caught up on this one. Well, as far as I can tell the Verralls (who were apparently called Ferrall in the early 16th century!), the Bonifaces and the Cheals seem to have populated most of that area of Sussex - so no doubt we are distantly connected!! My lot all appear to have lived in the Brighton/PevenseyLewes//Hailsham/Litlington areas. The strange thing is, the Verralls particularly seem to have had a good amount of dosh up to the mid 18th century or so - yet this is my dads side who I always imagined would be so much poorer than mums middle class lot. But as they all seem to have had 10 kids who each had 10 kids and so on, I guess by the Victorian period it was odds on a lot of the family would be poor. Small world isnt it. |

Ann, I havent used the site for a long time, but I remembered last time I suddenly realised if you clicked on the title of an order, the details actually come up!!! (For anyone going there first time peeps!) I got at least a dozen Bonifaces/Verralls and Cheals from it. Brilliant. |

I belong to a local village webiste Bitton families which has examples of removals and settlement orders. If you want to see some 'google Bitton families' and look under other information. If you can find any it should tell you when your family came to a village and where from and give details of work history - very useful. Removal orders might list your ancestors misdeeds. |

If you are really lucky the local Records Office may have some settlement/removal orders. If you are really, really, really lucky and your lot were from Sussex, there is a brilliant online site which lists hundreds of them and gives the details (the name of which fails me and all me favourites have disappeared whilst me puter was being repaired) but have a google for Settlement Orders and the area you are interested in, just in case something comes up. |

Thanks for that Kim That would certainly make sense. The person in question died in a workhouse, I think she was probably there due to ill health. Lyndsey |

I'm no expert but I think you had to return to the parish you were born to obtain parish relief if you became dependent on parish, ie losing job, income, house or being ill etc. And I think you had to attend the workhouse in your parish's area . Kim |

On a recent thread it was suggested to me that I look at settlement and removal orders. Can someone tell me what they are please? I've never heard of them before Thanks Lyndsey |
