What can I do next, I know mariages and births can be missed off the register, but surely a death MUST be registered. If that is so, why can`t I find several of the ones I have been searching for, the people concerned have vanished, or have they been abducted by aliens! I have searched high and low, all variations of names both English and Scottish death indexes, but can I find these people, nope. Any suggestions of what I can do next? Louisa Davis (formerly Geoghan, nee Paddison) I have tried for a remariage, nothing, she MIUST have died, but where and when??? she was born 1846 in Stafford last seen on 1901 census living in Stoke on Trent, with husband Alfred Davis Effie Colven nee Grant, born 1869 Derby, lived in Edinburgh and Glasgow Scotland from 1881, married there in 1897, her husband died in 1901 then she disappeared, she did not appear back in Derby and is not on Scottish deaths, nor remarriages Ah well, I`ve got that off my chest, feel a bit better now, and you never know, one day someone will say, oh you are a daft begger, there she is, big as the nose on your face, how could you have missed her! and all will be solved... Ishould be so lucky!

Maybe I'm missing the point, but surely in Louisa's case you would have so many deaths to choose from you wouldn't know which one was hers, rather than not finding an entry? Plus the possibility she was recorded as Davies rather than Davis? As for Effie........was that her given name? You are right that deaths should be registered, though up until 1875 it was not enforced. (I realise you are talking about after 1875 in these cases!!) I spent ages looking for a death for a cousin but just hadn't come forward far enough.....she died aged 100! Merry
