Hi i hope somebody out there can help me with this one. I have recieved a death certificate today and his occupation is baffling me a bit. It says Inspector of ....? something only the word looks like it says nuisances. Does anybody know what an inspector of nuisances was or is there another word that you can think of? At first i thought it said nuisanees? This is about the 1870's 1880's. Thanks Steph.

Thankyou very much Elaine thats make sense but i just thought nuisances? haha. So does that mean he didnt have a very low social status and wasnt very poor? Also does this mean he looked around the very poor parts of the city, he was living in Liverpool.? Steph Thanks once again!

found this - might be of interest In 1843, a Commission on the Health of Towns was set up and their first report was issued in 1844, with a second report nine months later. However, many towns and cities were beginning to appreciate the findings of the band of pioneers and embarked on their own to do something positive, by obtaining private legislation empowering the appointment of a Medical Officer of Health and Inspector of Nuisances. The forerunner in this was Liverpool, whose Act required the Council to appoint one or more persons to superintend and enforce the due execution of all the duties to be performed by the scavengers appointed under this Act, and report to the said Council and Health Committee all breaches of the Byelaws, rules and regulations of the said Council and Health Committee and to point out the existence of any nuisances, and such persons shall be called 'The Inspector of Nuisances'. This new official had to be a real tough guy. He was required to inspect premises which were dirty, dark, damp and overcrowded and then make sure that these appalling conditions were put right. He was unqualified and became the butt of jokes about, for instance, the smell on the landing, and frequently suffered physical assault for endeavouring to carry out his duties.
