Thanks Linda and John, I'll try those suggestions and re-instate my unmarried Unknowns with their married names in brackets. K

Unknown Report 2 Sep 2006 13:25

I have just checked my Tree which I re-uploaded a few days ago, but having hid the details of living persons. Each of my descendants is listed as Living Unknown. So I blame GR for the dramatic baby boom going on in the Unknown Family.

Following on from Linda's suggestion, I always record wives' unknown maiden names as husband's surname in brackets. Doesn't stop people contacting me about them occasionally. From the outset I've put known surnames in block capitals (can't remember why, it was a long time ago). I've also got some families where a child died and a later child got an identical set of first names. I label them (1) and (2). J

Michaela, That's a big difference in numbers!

Heather, That's great work to come up with that amazing number of Unknowns. Definitely a BIG reunion for that big mob.

I just checked ancestry ------460,512 matches. Seems to be a particularly popular 'name' in the USA.

Ok, couldnt resist - the grand total of people with the surname Unknown is: 1,216,578 Matches

I wonder if there is a real 'Unknown' family out there, and how on Earth they'd research their history... or even live their everyday lives!

Kay

Oh dear, those poor lost Unknowns floating around the GR trees. Makes me wonder what the current grand total is for all of the Unknown entries. Just imagine a family reunion for the Unknown clan!! Kay

When I don't know the maiden surname, eg. for a Jane married to Joseph Bloggs, I enter ''(Mrs Bloggs)'' as the lady's surname. I haven't had any Not Matches yet using this method. Linda :o)

I put a question mark, don't seem to get hot matches for them..... or a dot Kim

How about Elizabeth Watchamacallher! Lu

Jennie

Jennie Report 31 Aug 2006 07:44

She must be related to my 5 pages of Sarah unknown. However, i don't think we will ever know if we are realated as there have been over 108,000 Unknowns recorded in the past fortnight alone, according to My Tree Matches! My problem is I can't delete her easily so think I will change her name to something really unusual. (see thread on Britains rarest surname!) That should stop the inane hot matches. Jennie

Today I learnt a valuable lesson when I found my 5+ pages of Not Matches filled with Elizabeth Unknown!!! Usually my matches don't go beyond letter C so I was totally unprepared for today's list. Always a quick learner, I've now deleted the Unknown surname from my tree and switched off my Hot matches. Apologies to others who suffered my Elizabeth Unknown. Cheers, Kay
