There is a verb to hest, meaning among other things to bid or command. Could hestler a have been dialect word for someone who summons people together, such as a knocker-up for a factory? They could be said to have gone to work at his behest. Just a guess. Roger

Linda Where did you get the reference for this - census, cert? Have you more than one ref to it - ie its not a misreading?

Thanks everyone for your replies. Hi Nell the occup is on the 1838 marriage certificate for my 2x gt grandparents Bowden, Cheshire. It is the occupation for the bride's father. As it is one of my brickwalls finding the family of my 2x gt grandmother I thought if I found an explanation of the occup it might give me a clue....I think I am grasping at straws though!! Linda

Have you found him on 1841 census? Maybe his occupation there, or those of his neighbours will give a lead as to what he did. Gwyn

I have just come across an occupation for an entry in my tree ---- HECKLER. According to Old Occupations: Heckler or Hackler: Combed or 'carded' the coarse flax, using a hackle - a toothed implement used in linen weaving. This fits in with the rest of my ancestors, many of whom are listed as flax mill workers. Could this be yours too??

Not that I can see Gwyn..I know that my family came from Lymm in Cheshire and on the census my 2x gt grandmother was born there...but I can see nothing on the 1841census for him at Lymm but I have my 2x gt grandparents living there at the time. Perhaps my 3x gt grandfather was deceased. It looks like I will have to put it on hold till I can arrange to get to the Records Office sometime. Thanks Linda
