Registration of marriages is different to that of births and deaths. A birth/death registration requires the informant to go to the registrar.A marriage has to take place in the presence of a registrar, and as such the requirement to 'inform' is done at the time of the marriage. If a marriage can't be found in the index there are two main reasons. Firstly it didn't happen (and the couple acted as if married) or the details of the marriage have been lost before they were indexed in the bmd index. The local registrar should still have the details of any marriage which took place,it is usually an error at the time of the index being compiled which is the reason for the missing entry. It is unusual to find a registrar who was able to register birth, death AND marriages, usually a registrar could record either just marriages or just births and deaths. Glen

Hi Dea, Am looking at Ancestry and nothing so far, Freebmd is not loading they must be busy!! Christine OMG I didn't know that!! I knew that births didn't have to be registered until 1875, but didn't know that about marriages.....you live and learn!! Maybe that is why I cant find several marriages of mine! fuzzy x

Hi, I have a William Wood born c 1841 - Rochdale, Lancs. He married a 'Margaret' who was born c 1847, Ogden, Cheshire. Their children were: George c 1866, Louisa c 1874 ,Joseph c 1875, and Margaret Hannah c 1875. I have Margaret Hannah on 1891 + 1901 as niece to James Sidley and wife Louisa (nee Owen??) I woul therefore like to find a link to connect. Ideally, the marriage of William Wood to (hopefully) Margaret Owen. I DO know that there was a Margaret Owen born in this family around that year, and in that place. !! Can anyone help please? Dea X
