I've just come back to have another look at this - I've tried to unravel it before but with no real success.... (more below in a minute)

I have a marriage certificate which shows marriage September 22nd 1858 in Kirkstall, Yorkshire. The bride is Mary Anne Birch, 24 d of John Birch (cloth dresser) The groom is George Birch, (Cloth dresser) 24, s of George Birch (bricklayer) The marriage is witnessed by Joe Birch (or Bray) and what looks like Annie Ellis. I think I have George as a lodger in 1851 lodging with the Garth family who are connected - I think John b1811 is married to Martha Garth (maiden or first marriage) who may have had a child Jane Garth who shows with the family in 1851 as a daughter. I can't find Mary Anne (or Mary or MaryAnn) in 1841 at all, with either a John Birch or a George Birch. George and Mary Anne appear to have had a daughter Ellen in 1851 (Leeds 23 p560) - 7 years before they married. I have found a baptism on IGI showing George born Kirkstall 1833 son of James Birch and Charlotte. Can anybody a) find them in either 1851 or 1841 with their correct fathers, b) come up with some explanation - personally I think that the fathers may be the wrong way round!

Hi, Thanks for those - I found the George one, but the father is John - marriage cert says grooms father is George! - Thats why I wonder if they are the wrong way around. It is odd too that the father George is a cloth dresser, and so is the groom George, but John (the father of George according to the cert) is a bricklayer. Kay, That looks better - I've not found that one before. Mark

Just realised from 1851 that Ellen is probably a sister, not a daughter. Mark

In 1851 George the lodger is living in a street with many other Birch's which could be related - there is even a Mary Ann - with a Joseph for a father!! It does get complicated

Hi again Kay, Yes I've just started listing all the Birches and Garths in 1841 onwards to see if I can work out who should be where. Totally confused at present. Mark

There is also this christening on the IGI which could be possible Although on the 1851 Census it looks as though George was a clothier One of my ancesters was not baptised until later in life - which has been very confusing -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GEORGE BIRCH Male ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Event(s): Birth: Christening: 05 AUG 1838 Saint Mark Or Saint Mark Woodhouse, Leeds, Yorkshire, England ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Parents: Father: GEORGE BIRCH Family Mother: SARAH

You've just given me a thought. I wonder if George the lodger married the widow of Joseph (I've found a Joseph who dies in Leeds in 1856 which would have given George two years to woo her. I can feel some more certificates coming on. Update! No, that doesn't work - the father on the marriage cert is John Birch! Mark

Why not contact the county records office which covers the church where the marriage took place and ask them to check the original register entry - this would at least tell you if there had been a mistranscription of the fathers' details when the marriage details were submitted at the end of the quarter.
