if they are always recorded? My family have deafness as a hereditary disability and the story is its comes from before and including my GG Grandfather..... yet none of the census records I have found show deafness!! Is there a way of finding out?

Pinella Can't remember off hand, but I don't think disabilities were recorded until 1891/1901 censuses. I'll have a rummage. As to whether or not they were recorded, I guess that depends on whether anyone asked for or volunteered the info. I do have some examples of someone who has 'deaf & dumb since birth' on a census, and no remarks at all the following census, etc. As with all other records, the things that are written down - they ain't necessarily so!

Hi Some infirmities were recorded from 1851 census onwards. Here's a good website on the subject: http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/text/chap_page.jsp?t_id=Cen_Guide&c_id=9&show=ALL It explains what info on infirmities was collected on each census, and how reliable (or not) it was thought to be.
