Thanks to Glitter, I now have very firm thoughts that a relative was in Derby Asylum in the year 1901 during the census returns. Did people stay in Asylums until death, or could they have been released earlier that this?? I have no knowledge of what year this man died, and having searched on Ancestry, can't seems to find one that matches. I don't know whther I'm looking in the area of the Asylum, or his place of residence. James Clarke born c1860 in Loscoe/Codnor Derbyshire Lived there upto and including 1891 census. 1901 was in Derby Asylum. His wife was living in Nottingham and some of his children were living in Loscoe/Codnor with his father. Can anyone find his death for me? Many thanks |

He would only have been 41 in 1901, so he could have gone on until the 1950s or later. |

You're right grandpa, and his dad lived until he was 75, which was a good age in 1901! |

Its possible he could have been released, I have found a chap who was committed by his wife because he was threatening to kill her. He was released as 'cured' after 10 weeks and ended up being a suspect in the Jack the Ripper case. On the other hand, with a roof over his head and guaranteed meals plus medical attention on hand, he might have lived a long time. Of course, with a name like Clarke, it won't be easy! I'd contact the people who have the records and ask if they can find his file and see if he was released or died there. |

Gosh Nell, it sounds like Joe Public could have their family committed then?? I intend to get in touch with the RO in the morning just to see if they can shed some more light on this for me. On the census return, he is referred to as J C, but would they actually have them recorded by their actual names in the records do you think? Mandy |
