Hello everyone I hope someone can help me with this problem. I have patiently traced my g grandmother Mary Ann Thompson nee Keating born 1850 bishopsgate right back to 1851 census and her fathers name according to her Marriage cert and 1851,1861 census is John Keating a Shoemaker, wifes name is Margaret nee Healy. 1851 census shows a Mary Healy, mother in law, living with them Anyway have just received Mary ann's birth cert and it gives her fathers christian name as Murty (Murthy) freeBMD also shows Murty Keating married a margaret Healy 1849. My Irish friends say this could be a nickname of sorts. Any ideas anyone before i send of for yet another certificate. Thanks Les Bennett. |

Maybe the registration process took so long he consumed a lot of beverages..... 'More tea?' ;-) |

Perhaps it was Murphy? This is an Irish surname though I suppose it could be used as a first name. Murty could be a corruption of that. Or maybe it was Matty, short for Matthew? Good luck! |

If the birth and the marriage were both registered in the same district, they might have the same registrar recording it incorrectly. Mind you, my husband has a gt gt grandfather who started as Denis McCarthy (on his marriage cert) but was James McCarty on 1851 census James McCarthy on 1861 census Dennis McCarthy on his son's birth cert 1866 James Carter on 1871, 81, 91, 1901 censuses. Some of his children remained Carter, one son was McCarthy and two daughters married as McCarthys after their father was calling himself Carter. nell |

Or maybe Murty was his name, but on the census he wanted to sound less Irish. Or perhaps his full name was Murty John or John Murty. As he appears as Murty on two documents, he must have used that name a lot. Have you found his death? |

Thanks nell and gillian think you could both be right I think the only way to find out for sure is to send of for the marriage cert. Many thanks for your replies and sugestions. Les. |
