Elaine you're a gem, It seems that Maria stayed with her grandfather and only married after he died. My branch of the Tu7bbs family were in Dorset until the second half of the 1800's when they moved to Hampshire so it would be worth my while to get the discs, I might get my daughter to get them for me for Christmas that would solves another problem. Hampshire I can get from the record office. Could I ask you just to check for me what children Thomas Tubbs and His wife had. Thomas b.(c.) 1783 Horton - married Ann Gillingham 7. Oct 1802 - burial 31 Dec 1870 Horton Dorset. It's just another check that I have got the right branch. Many thanks Gloria

Sites used census returns - Ancestry BMD´s - either http://www.ancestry(.)co(.)uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx or http://freebmd.rootsweb(.)com/ (Reg would have used the same sites) The christening details I found for Eliza were from the BIVRI (British Isle Vital Records Index) which is a set of 16 discs produced by the Church of the Latter Day Saints, similar to the IGI. Some of the information is the same as the IGI but the majority is different. Coverage varies from county to county - see this website for coverage http://www.genoot(.)com/downloads/BVRI2/ - click on the blue numbers next to the county and it will give you a list of parishes included. Costs of discs - about 22 pounds. Value for money - if it covers the counties you are interested in then definitely yes. Has been very helpful to me with Dorset ancestors. If you have any other Dorset ancestors you want me to look up then give me some names and dates and I´ll see what is there. You said you thought Eliza´s mother, Maria, was possibly also illegitimate - think you are right - this is her christening from the BIVRI TUBBS, Maria Welch Christening Gender: Female Christening Date: 17 Jan 1841 Recorded in: Horton, Dorset, England Collection: BTs Mother: Alice TUBBS Source: FHL Film 1239201 Dates: 1811 - 1844

Reg, Elaine, Can I ask what sites you are using to get such quick and comprehensive results, because I just seem to get vague information which takes ages and leaves me wondering if I'm barking up the wrong tree. Gloria

That's absolutely smashing everyone. You've followed exactly the same route as me. Maria Horsford, nee Tubbs was the granddaughter of my 3x great grandfather, he brought her up. In turn she brought up Eliza Tubbs. I think you're right Reg, I was assuming she was much older when she died, I hate it when the research turns up these tragedies. but Louisa seems definitely to be the second wife. I wanted to tie up the end with Eliza otherwise I was getting really bogged down. I did come across the name Brixey and it threw me for a bit. Thanks a bunch everyone, I can put that to bed for now although it could be something I might pick up again later, particularly with Elizas' children. Gloria Just a thought, but I believe Maria was illegitimate and if Eliza was too there may have been some affinity there.

Brixey seems to be a local name, if there is no record of it in family maybe Maria was naming the father Is strange that Martha has name Horsford as she was born before marriage also, perhaps he was married before

Please can anyone help me tie up a loose end. I found a little girl in my tree Eliza Tubbs born 1865, Woodland Dorset. In 1881 she was employed as a domestic servant at Miles end farm Chalbury, Dorset. She married Jesse Bowering in Jul/Aug/Sep quarter 1884, 2 children Beatrice and Harry and in 1891 they were living at Barnfield road Edmondsham then I came up against a blank. I believe Eliza may have been illegitimate or something because in 1871 she was aged 6 and living with a family named Horsford the wife of whom I believe to have been a Tubbs before marriage. I just want to find the date of her death and if there is any further info just for interest sake. Gloria
