I have just met with a relative for the first time-great, but trawling through all the paperwork, we have a birth cert with a time on it. I an assuming this means there was a twin, have searched births and deaths, but can only find the one birth and no death. Were still births registered???? or does the time on the birth cert mean something else. Any help appreciated Debbie |

Times indicate twins, but there are instances where it was just a very careful registrar entering details for a birth. Stillbirths aren't in the normal index and cannot be searched for,i think i'm right in saying the stillborn index is not available for public viewing. Glen |

It depends how long ago and where the birth occurred. All Scottish births have a time of birth. Most births in England don't have a time unless it is a twin birth however there are exceptions. There is a stillbirth register which started in 1927 but details can only be made available to the parents (or siblings if parents deceased) |

Thanks The birth was in 1857, Manchester and looks like it might have been at home. Debbie |

Stillbirths weren't registered until 1927 and are on a closed register. If the twins were born alive, even if they died a minute later, they would be registered alive and appear in the births register. Although twins always have time of birth on their certs, I believe some registrars always put time of birth, so it doesn't necessarily mean that this birth was a twin - especially as you can't find another birth. After all, why register one twin and not bother with the other! nell |

As twins run in the family I think this one was a possiblity, I'm just having trouble finding any evidence. One twin did survive, and one could have died minutes later, and the family do seem to be dedicated in getting their children registered and baptised. The time isn't registered on all of the birth's just this one and it seems to be the same registrar for all of them (there was 10 children). Can anyone think of any other reason the time might have been mentioned?? Debbie |

Perhaps you are right and the other baby was stillborn. If so, though, you will not find any record of it from that date. Kath. x |
