Mayfair was notorious for crawling with prostitutes, though they were high class compared with the East End.

It sounds really impressive though Ann, having ancestors from Mayfair, get you LOL. After all my Ag Labs and Plasterers I've found a Compositer in the family. I thought for one minute it said Composter which wouldn't have been a great surprise, but no, on the next census he's a Typesetter/Compositer, so something different for me.

Strange you should say that Nell, we've just been watching 'Pride & Prejudice' (Colin Firth in the lake OMG), anyway, I've seen it before but it was like watching it for the first time because I was thinking more about the family that were alive at that time. I wouldn't think for one moment that any of mine lived like the 'Bennetts', but the film just seemed so different this time, like watching it with a fresh pair of eyes, does that sound silly?

Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire may well be posh (though I would dispute Milton Keynes and Cowley!) but my lot were ag labs who had to leave when the ceiling in their cottage fell in. Definitely not posh. Though I was intrigued a couple of years ago when we went to the village of Aston Rowant in Oxfordshire. My gt x 3 grandfather was born there. He ended up in an almshouse in Stoke Poges, and was a humble labourer all his life. AR WAS posh, all stud farms and houses with double driveways etc. No sign of any humbler homes, so I guess the help all lived in in flats above the garages. Not even a corner shop! nell

Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, I always think of those as being 'posh' areas.

Nothing posh about me, apart from the fact that I don't keep coal in the bath. Which bit did you think was posh???

Never been near a cut-throat razor! I also have Warwickshire, London, Cornish, Cambridge, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Surrey blood in my veins. Have found 'awkward customers' on all sides!

Which lot do you take after Nell? ;-))

Unknown Report 27 Aug 2006 18:12

Is this because of my threads? I'd point out that the Norfolk lot may be barmy but they're better than my Gloucestershire lot who went in for cutting people's throats. nell
