Do the record offices do searches for you then forward their findings to you via e-mail or post if you are too far away to visit or do you have to go in yourself. (Obviously I would expect to pay a charge) Also what information could I expect to find on Lunatic Asylum records, is it admission entries i.e. name and address etc or would there be more detailed medical records etc. Many thanks Jo. |

Yes they will conduct a search for you,a charge would be made and copies of documents posted to you. As to what the records may contain is anyones guess. Most of the archives/records offices have an e-mail contact option, you could ask first before commiting yourself to spending too much. Glen |

Records offices charge a research fee by the hour (varies, but generally about £18 or so) plus copying and postage. If they have to do a lot of searching - ie wading through unindexed entries - it will take longer than if you have definite dates etc. I've used Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Warwickshire & Gloucestershire records offices and been very pleased with the results. The more specific you can be about what you want the better all round. Some offices welcome enquiries and provide estimates. nell |
