Hello Nell, Many thanks for your thoughts. There is a couple of other children with Joseph and Mary on both census. If Mary was Joseph's real mum she would have been around 46 when she had him. Very possible, i know, but i dont think he would have been illegitimate. I suppose he could have been illegitimate to one of their elder children and they took him on as theirs? But then, the surname should still be Grove and not Parkin. I think your right in just getting the birth cert. Wentworth does come under Rotherham district so I am pretty sure its the right one. I might get this marriage cert first for him which does come under Herbert Parkin Grove to Lucy Ellis. I would like to see who he puts as father. My guess would be he puts Joseph Grove. Regards, Matt |

Let me re-arrange this whilst I have a think: Harold Parkin Grove born 1900 in Rotherham. marriage to Elsie Pearson in 1921 names father as Herbert Parkin Grove. Herbert with wife Lucy and son Harold on the 1901 census, 1891 Herbert Parkin born Wentworth as a son to Joseph and Mary Grove 1881 same family at the same address again as just Herbert Parkin but this time he is just a visitor, not son! The only birth reg I can find under all names is Herbert Parkin in Rotherham in 1876 which would fit with ages etc. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It's possible that Herbert was unofficially adopted by this couple, but he might also have been illegitimate. Have you found Joseph & Mary's marriage cert and did they have any other children? I guess the answer would be to buy his birth cert. nell |

Hello all. I think I have just uncovered a little family secret but I would like you advise please. My grandma's father was Harold Parkin Grove born 1900 in Rotherham. I have his marriage cert to Elsie Pearson in 1921 which names father as Herbert Parkin Grove. I have found Herbert with wife Lucy and son Harold on the 1901 census, all ok. Its when i get Herbert on the 1891 and 1881 census that things look interesting. He is on the 91 census as just Herbert Parkin born Wentworth as a son to Joseph and Mary Grove. On the 1881 cenus, he is with the same family at the same address again as just Herbert Parkin but this time he is just a visitor, not son! The only birth reg I can find under all names is Herbert Parkin in Rotherham in 1876 which would fit with ages etc. Would I be right to assume that the Grove couple 'adopted' Herbert or just brought him up and he tagged on their name to the end of his? Any advise, much appreciated. Matt |
