Is it possible to find the igi number for a very recent birth

Do you mean the GRO reference? I don't think the IGI have recent births. Kath. x

Individual events do not have IGI [International Genealogical Index] numbers. The IGI is a collection of genealogy records, some from parish records and some from people's own research or imagination! There are batch numbers for parish extracts (for example, all the marriages within a specific parish or county). What are you trying to find out and how recent is recent!

No, do not know the gro number. Recent is this month

I'vs seen a few entries on the IGI for 'recent' events but not many. IGI is used mainly for ancestor hunting pre 1837, after that use the GRO index

GRO website says 'For recent events registered within the last 18 months, applications for certificates should be made to the Register Office in the district where the birth, death or marriage took place. '

This birth happened the 8th of this month, and is part of a very sensitive story

Part of the prob is we don't know the surname the child was registered with, we have a choice of two

Then you would have to get in touch with the relevant register office, but I'm not sure whether or not they would issue a certificate that is so recent. Kath. x

District is birmingham, and I do have exact date but not the name

You could phone the registrar and explain the problem - give them all the details you know including the two names, and they might be sympathetic and look it up for you. Are you certain that the birth has been registered already, as you have six weeks to register a birth? Kath. x

Well, you know when and where so I'd give them a ring and give both possible names - if you know the mother's name they might accept this as a checking point. In my experience registry offices have always been very helpful You'e got nothing to lose!

Lynda, you say that there is a choce of two names gthat the child may have been registered under. IF you are talking about the parents then you may find that the child has been registered under two names though only one certificate will be valid.
