Presumably you mean you haven't been able to locate the birth/marriage entries. The index contains English and Welsh entries but is compiled from information from every local registrar office using a quite simple but fallble system. When a birth (or death) is registered the informant visits the registrar, the registrar notes the details and records them, then issues a cert. The details are retained locally to the event but also re-recorded and forwarded to the GRO. At the GRO the details from every office have to be sorted both by date and name to ensure that the index is chronologically abd alphabetically correct. The scope to lose or misplace an entry are there,as are the chances that the details are wrongly transcribed. It could also be that a birth or death is unregistered (unlikely but it can happen) A marriage occurs in front of a registrar so it can never 'not' be recorded, but it may not be correctly recorded,(names can be mis-spelt,mistranscribed,misheard and the documents may go missing en route from the local registrar to the GRO or be mislaid at the GRO) A local registrar will at times have events recorded which never made the GRO index. Paul Maybe your mum's brother has a different father and a different surname in the indexes.

i have already checked with mum - her mum never married thier fathers so all children had her name and he was born between the elder two and the younger ones

There is the remote chance he wasn't registered, but if you have an idea of where and whe, then the register office for that area will be able to search for the birth regisrtration for you,(and usually issue a copy certificate if you require it). If you were to ask for a cert and can quote the approximate year the office will usually search a year or two either side to be sure and issue a cert for £7.No search fee applies. The most difficult thing is to find which office you need, but if they were all born in the same place then the district number will be traceable via Genuki quite easily. Based on what you have said you will need either the Chatham or Maidstone office, Glen
